Autonomous Big City Travel

A week in Paris has opened my eyes on how inevitable the autonomous driving future really is. I live in the South of Holland and try to live a Practice What You Preach live because I am very concerned by the prospect of what our continued Western lifestyle will mean for the future of planet Earth. So I took the train to Paris for a week long holiday. 
Traveling by public transportation means planning ahead so days before my trip I looked the departure times of the trains and I got the scare of my life: In order to be in time for my 12:00 pm Thalys from Rotterdam to Paris I had to leave my house at 8 AM because half way my journey a bridge was being repaired. It meant I had to leave 2,5 hours earlier than if trains ran regularly. Just to get to the starting point of my journey.


I decided that starting the day with the delay risk of 4 train switches was not going to increase my relaxation I decided to drive my hybrid to Rotterdam, create some unnecessary CO₂ and park there. Practice what you preach goes a long way but I don’t go so far as to ridicule myself.
The Thalys was right on time although I don’t understand why I had to be at the platform half an hour early. The coffee in the station was great and I got on my first High Speed Train ever!
Within minutes of departure the train was comfortably blasting with 300 km/h in the direction of Paris, first stop Antwerp. There the train had to wait for a full hour because between Antwerp and Bruxelles an accident had happened. 

This was when I realized how highly inflexible the railway infrastructure really is: hundreds or thousands of people are stranded because somewhere in the system somebody didn’t look out and got run over by a train. All Trains on both sides of the accident have to wait till the track is made available again. On a highway you get a traffic jam but at least 2 of the 3 lanes are usually available shortly after something happens and you can take an exit to drive around a problem.
Anyways, we arrived fossil free in Paris an hour late. No big deal because I was in holiday mode. The total travelling time (6:40) from my house to Paris was substantially longer than had I driven point to point. How would this travel scenario roll out in a not so distance future autonomous EV world? Would I order a vehicle to bring me from Weert to Paris in 4,5 hours while I was enjoying blogging in the back seat? Absolutely!


I walked to my hotel with my roller suitcase, enjoying the Big City sound, smell and buzz. My eye immediately caught the numerous Toyota Hybrid cabs (mostly Prius), busses, botched cars and triple wheel motorcycles. My hotel was just ten minutes walking from Gare du Nord, in the middle of a busy neighborhood.
The next morning I got myself a public transportation chipcard (valid for ten years, 5€) and ordered a 1 week unlimited travel fee for just €23 and was ready to go. Paris had an amazing subway network and you can get from anywhere to anywhere and the frequency of the trains is amazing, can’t remember having to wait more that 3 minutes.


I really enjoyed the rides to get around town. But once you get back out in the streets you notice that there is an even denser network of buses overlaying the subway network. The sound of the buses is everywhere and the (tourist) buses are followed by at least ten taxis and 50 personal transportation devices (including occasional public bikes). In numerous streets you see really dirty shared public EV’s charging and occasionally you actually see one moving. The idea is cool but who wants to drive such a dirty not looked after piece of shit?


Paris is a pandemonium of people moving around all the time and I sat down at one cafe to think out this blog….
Just close your eyes and fast forward 10 years:

  • all the taxis are replaced by autonomous Uber/Tesla EV’s. Not Model S, not model 3, but more something like a Smart. Taking up no space and moving 2 people at a time over empty boulevards
  • All the dirty public EV’s are gone, because they are charged and maintained outside the city 
  • Nobody uses buses because point to point travel with an app is way easier and cheaper
  • No cars parked anywhere
  • Air quality improves big time
  • Noise level improves big time 
  • I think metro will survive because it is already fully electric, quiet, fast and really cheap

I am sure this city is absolutely ready for this autonomous EV revolution. They have done many experiments with public and shared services and paying for taxis. Autonomous EV’s will revolutionize the Paris experience, in a very good way.
If you want to enjoy the diesel noise and smoke and a million dented cars, you better hurry, they won’t last.

PS. For the major Paris : immidiatly forbid new fuel powered two/three wheelers and mandatory replacement by 2020, quickest win for cleaner air and less noise,

The Climate Lawsuit : Who should make decisions regarding our climate?

The Netherlands has seen a unique lawsuit recently: “Urgenda, a non-profit organisation with an Urgent Climate Change Agenda as it’s core business, sued the Dutch state. It asked the judge to force the Government to deliver on the promises it made to the voters: reduce CO2 emissions by 30% by 2025 compared to the baseline of 1990.  The judge decided in favour of Urgenda, the Government lost. The conservative administration was flabbergasted. This week the administration decided to appeal.

There are many discussions going on about the legal status of the judges verdict:
– Can a judge overrule a parliament that is not forcing the administration to deliver on its promises ?
– In such an unprecedented case the highest appeal should be sought in order to get juris prudentia
– etc

The conservative party VVD is especially vocal about the legal issues. Urgenda and others with rational green blood say that all this legal wizardry is just delaying the judges verdict, we need to take action. NOW.

I want to defend here that the parliamentary democracy may not be equipped for dealing with the unique issue of man made climate change threatening not only the type of civilisation we have  now but even the very survival of mankind.

The problem is that the Earth’s climate does not listen to arguments of coalition majorities to ignore climate change laws.

Even IPCC’s  “2 degree warming above pre-industrial levels is safe” is total bullocks, that was a political compromise of a unbelievable destructive kind.

In the ’80’s we/our parents were extremely lucky that the ozone-hole issue got resolved. Scientists discovered the source of the hole and rapid CFC-banning laws reduced levels of the gas fast enough so that the hole stabilised and started closing. Makes me think, maybe that is where the idea was born that there are simple fixes for ecological disasters.

But burning unimaginable amounts of fossil carbon, with now thawing permafrost methane adding to the equation, is changing the whole biosphere in a fundamental way. We have probably passed several tipping points already and we are rapidly pushing other limits. I will list several that, when going over the tipping point may extinguish mankind in unbelievable short periods of time.

 Hydrogen Sulfide 

In the history of Earth there have been several mass extinction events that may be attributed to dead zones in oceans where algae blooms occurred of H2S producing algae. Enormous clouds of the poisonous gas drifted from sea to land, killing everything in its path. The eastern Pacific is now an insane 3,5 degrees warmer than what mankind has ever experienced. Dead zones have already been detected and the algae won’t send a warning message when they decide that the pool is warm enough too party.

Gulfstream 

The Gulfstream that keeps Western Europe (my home) at a cosy moderate temperature in stead of mid-Canadian freezing temperatures is being driven by a conveyer belt of sinking cold salt water south of Greenland. There is now a huge 2 degree below normal cold patch  filled with floating fresh meltwater from Greenlands melting glaciers. Problem is that fresh water is lighter than salt water and so it doesn’t  sink. The warm salt water can’t cool and sink… We are currently pressing the “stop” button of the conveyer belt as hard as we can. There is no political compromise that can negotiate the switch in the “ON” position.

Antarctica  

The pole is melting fast, But the Antarctic is a different beast than the North Pole. Where the North Pole is a sea surrounded by land, the South Pole is land surrounded by sea. Rising global temperatures have a completely different effect. The volume of ice on Antarctica is  dwindling fast and the meltwater makes its way to the ocean. Here, just like near Greenland the cold fresh water floats on the salt water, again preventing warm salt water to cool and sink. The floating fresh water freezes faster so we expect the edges of the floating sea ice to extend. Difficult stuff for conservative deniers to grasp.

North Pole

We’re three weeks from the end of this years melt season and it is going to be a dramatic one once we close the books. The red line shows the (already smaller than historic) average extent of the sea ice in the 1980-2010 period. This year we will see far, far less than that. Black sea water sucks up heat where white ice reflects it, so the Pole is being converted into a solar collector. No wonder that the average temperature there already far exceeds IPCC’s safe 2 degrees, and the positive feedback cycle has only just started. Practical problem of all this open water in the fall? Storms. In all of mankind’s history the polar coasts were protected by thick sheet ice. Now the unprotected coasts get battered by waves that can develop freely over the open water. Inuit villages are at serious risk of being swept away.

And I can continue….

Lobbycracy

We are presently living in a Lobbycracy, the post modern version of the thing we invented in 1789. At that time there were no multinationals that dictated what we should eat, what to buy and how we should travel.

Coca Cola, Tabacco and Nestlé fund hundreds of lobbyist per member of parliament and so dictate the outcome of votes. And that’s why Urgenda asked the judge to take one step back and look at the bigger picture. The judge did just that and he saw exactly what is going on:

The profit seeking Internationals and parliament overwhelming Industrial Complex that now rules the Earth is changing the biosphere so badly that it is threatening the inhabitants who may not all necessarily agree with the lawmakers bending down to Exxon and Philip Morris. You can’t use solutions from within a system to prevent the system from destroying itself. So we need a new  governing body that prioritises what is important for survival and what is drivel in the margin.

I compare this to Isaac Newton’s time. In his day mathematics was basic: plus, minus, devision. But when studying the planets and falling apples he needed a new language to describe what he saw. So he made up a complete new framework and invented Integration and differential math. He altered the scientific world.

We now need to define a new politcal language to think about our selves and our planet, “growth” and “shareholder value” no longer suffice.

It may sound strange but I really believe we need to think about a mandate for a new planet conserving UN to shut down coal mines. Willing or unwilling.

A coterie of local conservative hobbyists in parliaments is not the right gremium to govern Planet Earth. They are to interwoven with the lobby system that is destroying us.

Until that time thoughtful Earthlings will have to take the lead in ignoring their governments that are fully focussed on as cheap as possible coal power so “consumers” get “investment budget” to buy unnecessary goods. Let’s invest in our local economies and sustainable energy, even if it is not the best bargain compared to  cheapdealofhteweek.com.

Let’s head towards a society where we contribute as much as we can and use what we need in stead of building a climate boundaries denying TTIP framework designed to funnel all wealth into the pockets of the 1% of 1% and the rest has to struggle…..or die.

Waarom ik voor de coöperatieve ZKV Anno12 koos (update)

Tja, uw gezondheid is u €67,50 per maand waard dus u koopt uw polis bij de kiloknaller die wel inzage in uw volledige leven eist en krijgt en uw huisarts wordt u toegewezen, maar wie geeft er een fuck, je bent jong en gezond dus je neemt een hoog eigen risico, lekkere de totale zorglast, die daar niet door verandert, bij de oude en zwakke mensen neerleggen.

Je klaagt over een bananenrepubliek? Je bent zelf de aap! Je had kunnen kiezen voor een coöperatie zonder eigen risico, met teruggeven wat niet nodig bleek en met inspraak en zonder privacy gedoe. Maar nee jullie willen In november weer een half miljard reclamebudget weggooien en “gratis” hoortoestellen. Het is jullie keus.

R.I.P. Anno12, doodgeboren coöperatie van minder dan 2500 mensen die het wel anders hadden gewild. Je had veel beter verdient.

Dit jaar is het voor het eerst mogelijk om een echte coöperatieve ziektekostenverzekering (ZKV) af te sluiten. In een tijd waarin de overheid zijn best doet om de macht van banken en verzekeraars tot in het extreme te vergroten (“zodat de markt efficiency af kan dwingen”) is dat een zeer welkome ontwikkeling.

De vier grote ZKV conglomeraten (samen meer dan 90% van de markt!) hebben zelfs een speciale vereniging opgericht (ZVN) die bij monde van baantjesjager Rouvoet iedereen die onwelgevallige geluiden laat horen de mond wil snoeren: “de markt duldt geen tegengeluid”. Zodra in een markt dit soort signalen te horen zijn is dat voor mij het teken dat die markt dood en dood ziek is. Zo nu dus ook in de ZKV-markt.

Daarom was ik heel blij toen in de loop van dit jaar duidelijk was dat Rob Adolfsen zijn droom doorzette om een echte coöperatieve ziektekostenverzekering op te zetten: Anno 12 (hij loopt al even rond met het idee denk ik :-). Doel om een moderne ledenvereniging op te zetten die samen de premie opbrengen om van mensen die ziek worden in de coöperatie de ziektekosten te kunnen betalen. Het is zijn overtuiging dat het coöperatief goedkoper, menselijker en beter kan dan met een moloch van 2 miljoen monddode premiedokkers.

Een coöperatie heeft meestal zeer betrokken leden die er alles aan doen om het, zonder direct eigenbelang, voor de groep beter te maken. Ik schreef eerder al over aandelencoöperaties zoals Symbid waar ik ook heel enthousiast over ben.

Waarom ik denk dat Anno12 zo verfrissend is? Ten eerste gaan de leden meedenken over het dienstenpakket, ten tweede is de coöperatie helemaal “2014” zonder een geschiedenis die decennia teruggaat tot ver voor de automatisering. We zullen dus de efficiëntste processen in kunnen richten.

Dingen die mij al jaren enorm storen en die ik als eerste ga voorstellen in de coöperatie:
– waarom moet je premie betalen voor zaken die 100% zeker op je pad gaan komen, zoals de halfjaarlijkse controle van de tandarts? Dat zijn helemaal geen ziektekosten, dat is gewoon persoonlijk onderhoud. 2x per jaar een paar tientjes die ik bij de kassa van de tandarts moet pinnen, dan de bon moet scannen om die vervolgens bij mijn ZKV te declareren. Die kosten zitten gewoon in de polis verwerkt, dus bergen administratie voor twee transacties van een paar tientjes. Zinloos rondpompen van geld, weg ermee.
– ik koop al jaren contactlenzen en als ik in mijn polisvoorwaarden ga kijken geloof ik dat ik eens in de drie jaar 35€ mag declareren. Voor lenzen! Absurd! De een heeft puistjes, een ander minder goeie ogen en een volgende hoort minder goed. Als je aan die ongemakken iets wilt doen dan koop je een bril of een hoortoestel, maar dat zijn toch geen ziektekosten? Het zijn gewoon levensonderhoud kosten. Je kan een mooie bril of een duur hoortoestel kopen, eigen keuze. Weg uit de polis dus.
– ik stoor me mateloos aan audiciens die reclame maken met “gratis hoortoestel”. Echt. Die dingen kosten veel geld en je gaat toch niet lopen leuren met die dingen omdat ze in een of ander basispakket horen. Pure verspilling. Als iets waarde voor je heeft dan koop je het maar (en doordat consumenten ze op een echte markt gaan kopen zullen de kosten snel dalen).

Ik wil een ZIEKTEkostenverzekering, zo een die de rekening betaalt als ik plotseling een bypass nodig heb, of mijn Intensive Care kosten betaalt als ik een zwaar ongeluk krijg.

Mensen die reuma krijgen dan? Of kanker? Of andere chronische aandoeningen? Kijk, dat is een typisch geval van “daar zorgt de samenleving voor” want die kosten zijn niet meer verzekerbaar (je bent dan een brandend huis). Dat we dat toch via ZKV’s laten lopen is een politieke keuze, maar van mij zou dat ook gewoon via de belastingen mogen.

Afijn, ik ben lid geworden van de coöperatie, heb een ledencertificaat besteld (alle certificaten samen vormen het buffer dat een coöperatie wettelijk nodig heeft, lid worden zonder kan ook) en nu maar hopen dat ze de Nederlandse ZKV wereld serieus op zijn kop gaan zetten en dat ik volgend jaar een heel jaar premie voor niks betaal. Ik nodig jullie allemaal uit om onze ziektekosten weer echt iets van onszelf te maken, en ook lid te worden van Anno12

How much energy will a Fossil Free society need?

Interesting discussions I have these days. Where climate change deniers usually just ignore the question of energy security (Big Oil will deliver) pro-nuclear folks acknowledge the climate issue and the scale of the needed transformation. That makes them good discussion partners.

Pro-Nuclear points out that if every kWH of energy used today needs to come from alternatives, “the renewables” are going to be highly inadequate and only nuclear can deliver the required base load. This is where the subject of this blogpost comes from. I want to show that a Fossil Free economy needs massively less energy, that can be supplied by the Renewables.

The point is that the Fossil economy is exactly that: an economy running on Fossil Fuels so it’s no wonder it uses a lot of energy. But what if we think of a fossil free society, what chunks of energy will just drop out of the equation?
I don’t have figures (yet) so it’s going to be quantitatively at this moment, if you do have figure please share them with me.

Mining
Fossil Mining requires massive amounts of energy, in drilling, blasting, digging, breaking, transporting cleaning and refining. In a FossilFree society the activity ceases to exist. As resources become ever less in quality the energy per unit of product will soar, even to the point where energy out < energy in (only sustainable by accruing debt)

Transport of energy sources
Transporting all the fossil fuels uses a lot of energy : truck diesel, train diesel, pipeline pumps….no longer needed

Fossil mining and transport industry
Coal diggers, mega trucks, oil tankers, storage tanks, pipelines, deep sea platforms, off shore helicopters, tugboats … Not needed anymore… We will need fewer Iron Works, steel factories, machine factories, maintenance crews, security groups,

Energy infrastructure
All the above are hard at work to feed these: the coal plants and oil refineries. No more coal harbors, compression stations, oil refineries. The highly inefficient coal plants and gas stations (turning 50% of the embedded energy into waste heat) can shut down.

By now we must have saved absolutely massive amounts of “energy”, but it gets better

Food production
The world on Fossil Fuels, Monsanto and Unilever is supposed to eat processed foods and minced cows. The embedded energy in a hamburger is absolutely horrifying : the industrial wheat, transported across the globe and made into highly refined flour for the buns, the cows eating fossil fuel created corn that came half way round the world. The whole processing and packaging, freezing and storage industry….. Waste, waste, waste to,create empty calories that turns your body in a hunger machine : waste food in, more hungry feelings within an hour, fat stored in your body. A fossil free society will eat locally produced real food.

Global transport (sea and air)
$0,25 garbage toys from Shanghai thrown away broken after 10 minutes, brought into first world harbors by the container load. It will stop. It has no value. Flying on tax free kerosine? A memory of the past. Tickets that have all embedded social costs calculated into them? Unaffordable. Flying as we know it will stop. Massive amounts of energy saved again.

Civilian transport
Walkable neighbourhoods, Cities with integrated work/living areas, transport by cycles, e-bikes, EV’s, hybrid busses, light rail. Obscene amounts of energy to be saved here

Urban transport
Last mile transport with electric vehicles, absolute nobrainer.

Household appliances
PassivHaus, Heatpumps, LED-lighting, hotfill washing machines and dishwashers, OLED-TV’s, 5V central charger with house wide distribution: saving possibilities by the shipload

Electricity production
After we’ve created our Fossil Free society we will need some power to keep it going. With all the aluminum smelters and refineries gone we will need energy mostly for households. We make is with wind, solar, biogas, algae diesel, molecular heat storage, hydro, reverse osmosis, tidal and what makes sense locally. The massive amount of EV’s will buffer and redistribute all this abundant energy so that the lights stay on at night and in the winter.

I’ve fired all the rednecks and oil tanker captains, what are they going to do?

New industries
Electricity generation
Wind farms, Solar PV farms, CSP farms, biomass production……loads of jobs here.

Electricity storage
We need bio plant operators and workers to create algae diesel, power2gas, elephant grass, cannabis fibers. We need lots and lots of hands there to maintain these systems.

Local food
People will quickly adopt to Grasshoppers (chocolate dipped or plain) and fish. The energy per Calorie is orders of magnitude lower than Fossil Meat. Towns will be full of mixed agricultural activity with chicken and pigs, rooftop agriculture.

Repair/Circular economy
Things break, but because in a FF-society we make repairable goods we get a whole, refurbishment industry. Lots of work for creative people. Having a circular economy will keep the energy embedded in products in the system in stead of dumping it in a landfill after initial use.

Community services
Because we no longer are relying on Big Banks supported HealthIndustry to “cure” sick people created my Monsanto, McDonalds and Unilever we can have community based health centers where broken bones are healed and I’ll people are cared for regardless of income or social position.

So the point I’m trying to make is that Nuclear may not be that necessary in a society that said goodbye to Chevron and Shell, maybe we can even do without it as the great yellow fusion reactor gives us way more than we can ever use. Just capture, store en distribute.

….And we live happily ever after and tell our children horror stories of the a black world where people believed they needed Hummers to drive 50 miles to Malls to buy new plastic dolls each and every Christmass and eat boxes of Chocolate coated corn flakes jus to be happy.

Klokkie

Liep vandaag tegen een mooie persoonlijke blog aan over een geërfde ring. Omdat ik zelf vorige week het horloge van mijn pa erfde raakte dat stuk me, en wil hier nu graag het verhaal van mijn nieuwe klokkie vertellen.

Eerst maar eens wat over mijn pa vertellen. Gerard Boelen was projectleider bij de Hollandse Beton Groep, buitenlandivisie Interbeton. Tegenwoordig heet iedereen die de upgrade van Office 2010 naar 2013 begeleidt “projectleider” maar mijn pa was van het soort die met een arm vol injecties tegen ziektes die nu niet eens meer bestaan midden in het oerwoud gedropt werd en tegen zijn mannen zei: links de ingang van het vliegveld, rechts de toegangs weg : “GO”….. En dan een jaar later klaar was, binnen budget en met minder doden dan gepland. Zo’n man dus.

Ons gezin was mee en woonde in Port Harcourt. Communicatie met Nederland ging nog via Radio Scheveningen en later met een telex op kantoor in de stad. Brieven van opa en oma kwamen op heel dun blauw vloeipapier. Naar school gingen we op de Shell Compound. Prachtige herinneringen.

In 1975 bouwde Saoedi Arabië een nieuwe containerhaven bij de stad Dammam. Een Duits-Nederlands conglomeraat (DC22) bouwde de haven voor de kust met baggerschepen en een eindeloze hoeveelheid caissons (waar mijn pa voor tekende). Tijdens de voorbereidingen kwam mijn pa een keer terug op Schiphol voor overleg op het hoofdkantoor in Rijswijk. De reis werd toen tweewekelijks gemaakt dus het ophalen was, hoewel elke keer feest, routine geworden. 1 van die keren duurde het een hele poos voordat Pa langs de douane mocht.

Wat bleek? Hij had in Saudi besprekingen gevoerd en die waren blijkbaar tot genoegen van de dienstdoende Sjeik verlopen want die had mijn pa en zijn Duitse compagnon een klokkie kado gedaan. Je moet hier weten dat mijn vader echt helemaal niets gaf om statussymbolen. Hij droeg nog het opwindhorloge uit zijn studententijd en de enige luxe die hij zich permitteerde was een nieuwe Samsonite elk jaar (die dan ook volkomen versleten was van alle MacGyver avonturen). Afijn. De douanier van dienst zag het klokkie om pols van mijn pa en vroeg of hij het eens mocht bekijken.
Mijn pa gaf het horloge af en kreeg even later te horen dat hij 2000 gulden invoerrechten moest betalen. Mijn pa moest keihard lachen en zei dat ‘ie het horloge mocht houden. Aangezien we twee maanden later zouden emigreren naar Saudi stond de douanier uiteindelijk toe om het horloge weer mee te nemen. Het horloge heeft daarna 20 jaar non-stop perfect gewerkt in de meest extreme omstandigheden en toen ik het vorige week in handen kreeg begon het, na 18 jaar stilstaan, mijn pa overleed in 1997 aan malaria, door de beweging vanzelf weer te lopen.

Ik vond het nooit een echt mooi horloge, maar het voelt toch heel bijzonder om het nu te dragen. Ik zal veel aan hem denken als ik de verantwoordelijkheid voor de upgrade naar de nieuwste versie van Office op me neem.

PvdArmen: “Ieder voor zich en God voor ons allen”

Ik heb het nu 20 keer gelezen:

Een diep filosofische beschouwing van mevrouw Klijnsma over waar het volgens haar naar toe moet met onze samenleving. Een fraai kijkje is dat … in het totale morele verval van de PvdA in het algemeen en de mensen die het er voor het zeggen hebben in het bijzonder.

Want in wat voor wereld leef je als socialist als je wel meent dat mensen die nauwelijks van hun AOW (met eventueel een uitgehold pensioentje) kunnen leven wel even een moestuin gaan aanleggen in hun riante tuin (fruitbomen!) en hun hypotheek aflossen.

Even een rijtje losers die mevrouw Klijnsma uitsluit van haar socialistische heilstaat:
– huurders
– mensen in een appartement
– mensen die hun naasten met een PGB ondersteunen en helemaal geen pensioen opbouwen.

Kijk, ik ken wel mensen die hun tuin voor de ontspanning voor een stukje ombouwen tot moestuin, sommigen houden zelfs vee! Ik vermoed dat hun huizen al een poosje niet meer van de bank zijn. En ik denk ook dat ze niet hoeven uit te kijken naar de maandelijkse storting van de Sociale Verzekerings Bank als ze straks 65, 66 herstel 67 zijn. Nee, deze mensen kunnen zelf wel bepalen wanneer het welletjes is geweest en hebben helemaal geen enkele boodschap aan wat de PvdA of zelfs de VVD allemaal voor onzin uitkraamt. Ik geloof niet dat dat de categorie mensen is waar mevrouw Klijnsma zo vrolijk over zat te filosoferen.

Dat is de politiek filosofische kant van mijn probleem met mevrouw Klijnsma. De tweede set problemen betreft de meer praktische kant van het verhaal:
– volgens mensen die het kunnen weten heb je ongeveer 8000 m2 tuin nodig om in je eigen voedsel (het jaar rond) te kunnen voorzien. Een echt PvdA-tuintje zeg maar.
– als fruitbomen inkomen opleveren, dan zijn de grabbeljatjes van Jeroen vast niet ver om daar belasting over te gaan heffen, is dat het proefballonetje misschien?
– al die mensen in hun huurappartementjes, mag ik die gaan helpen door op vrijvallende lege bedrijfsterreinen stadstuinen aan te leggen? Gaat u me helpen die onroerendgoed bezitters te dwingen hun eigendommen terug te geven aan de samenleving omdat het nooit meer enig maatschappelijk nut zal hebben? Vast niet.
– gaat u me helpen de bestemmingsplannen aan te passen zodat we onze buurtparkjes in mogen richten als stadstuin? Vast niet.
– gaat u de Voedsel en Warenautoriteit opdracht geven om op te rotten en mensen zelf laten bepalen wat ze wel en niet willen telen. Ik denk dan vooral aan het probleem dat al die stadstuinen waarschijnlijk binnen no-time gepatenteerde overgewaaide genen bevatten van Monstanto c.s. en dus half Nederland voor de rechter zal dagen om licentie kosten af te dragen. Vast niet.
– bel je even met Ivo en Fred want als er iets is dat die arme bejaarde nodig heeft dan is het wel goede en goedkope medicijnen tegen pijn en reuma en laat dat nou JUIST iets zijn waar je wel op je balkon voor kan zorgen. Yep. hennep, daar is tie weer. Gaat u vast niet doen he?

Ik weet dat het bijna komkommer(uit eigen tuin)tijd is Jetta, maar je slaat de plank wel zo gruwelijk mis met je gekwaak dat het echt schunnig is. Je hebt geen benul hoeveel mensen die je tot je achterban zou moeten rekenen op hun ziel getrapt hebt. Ga je schamen, of beter, stel Diederik voor om de stekker er nu maar gewoon eens uit te trekken, want wij burgers hebben wel ideeën, maar daar hebben we een echt links kabinet voor nodig, eentje met ballen, niet eentje met corps ballen.

Contactloos betalen? Contextloos betalen!

Door de vele aandacht voor mijn “Contactloos-betalen” stukkie vorige week heb ik heel veel nagedacht over al dat moderne betalen. Waar ik vorige week vooral verbaasd was en opgewonden over de snelheid en eenvoud van dat ongecontroleerde betalen, nu heb ik ook echt een menig over het fenomeen NFC- of zo u wilt, cashloze betalen.

Ik vind het namelijk een ongelooflijk gevaar voor de privacy van mensen dat de banken met een maniakale snelheid afkoersen op een cashloze samenleving. “Contant” zou een grondrecht moeten zijn, net zoals de vrijheid van meningsuiting of het recht op vergadering. Want als we niet oppassen hebben we over 5 jaar alleen nog maar PIN en NFC en wordt je scheef aangekeken als je met een briefje van 20 een SIM-kaart wilt afrekenen. Ja, ik duik maar gelijk naar de kern van het verhaal. Iedereen heeft wel eens een periode in zijn leven (zei de midlifecrisis expert) waarin hij of zij behoefte heeft om even helemaal “out of context” dingen te doen die tegen alle regels van de dagelijkse routine in gaan. Ergens op een rare plek afspreken om met een vriend of vriendin een bak koffie te drinken. Een avondje niet naar de sportclub maar met een spannend iemand naar de bioscoop. Niks wereldschokkends, maar wel iets wat je wilt doen zonder een complete audit trail van minuut tot minuut achterlatend van parkeerautomaten via bioscoopkassa naar Grand café. Dat kan dan niet meer, en hoewel mijn midlife crisis al weer vet achter de rug is vind ik het idee dat zoiets in de toekomst niet meer kan ronduit beangstigend. De tijd en ruimte hebben om jezelf opnieuw uit te vinden zonder dat je daar achteraf (per ongeluk electronisch bankieren open laten staan op de iPad terwijl de deurbel gaat) mee geconfronteerd kunt worden.

Ik denk dat we naar een situatie aan het toegroeien zijn waar je bankafschrift een grotere bedreiging van je privacy wordt dan een schoenendoos vol liefdesbrieven. Dus daarom : NEE, ik hoef dat stiekeme ijsje van €2,50 met mijn zoontje niet nog sneller dan met een biljet van 5€ te betalen. Zorg maar dat de transactiesnelheid van PIN die van NFC evenaart, dan is pinnen snel zat. En hou die cashgeldkassa alsjeblieft gewoon beschikbaar. Is ook goed voor het hoofdrekenen van onze jeugd. Ik heb iig besloten veel meer cash te betalen, de bank, de winkelier, Google en mijn vriendin hoeven niet een life-log van mijn portemonnee te hebben. De grote flappentapactie van vanmorgen meneer ABN, die u nu verbaasd zit te bekijken, is het levende bewijs dat ik de daad bij het woord heb gevoegd.

Reality Check Zorgkosten

Van de week verscheen deze brief in mijn timeline:

En ik lig er nu al vier dagen wakker van. Ik heb begrepen dat dit schering en inslag is. Het komt er op neer dat de jaarpremie van een gezonde Nederlander er even doorheen gejaagd wordt omdat in de hele keten van begin tot eind er geen enkele keer een reality check uitgevoerd wordt.

Ik zal de keten van begin tot eind doorlopen en per stap aangeven wat er volgens mij gedaan moet worden. In elke stap had deze waterval van verspilling gestopt kunnen worden.

Gegeven :  Patient heeft klacht en komt bij huisarts (denk ik)

Stap 1 : De huisarts
Wat hier al misgaat is dat de arts weet hoe hij de patiënt  moet helpen (brace van 100 euro aanmeten) en de klant met een machtigingsaanvraag het zorgcircuit instuurt.

Ik zou de klant namelijk adviseren om die ZELF aan te schaffen, alleen al omdat het veel sneller gaat. Ik spreek uit ervaring helaas en heb gezien hoe het gaat als de zorgsector zich op een case stort met z’n formulieren molen. Ik als kind van een terminaal zieke moeder werd er elke keer kriegel van : formulier voor een po. Ding is drie maanden gebruikt, na overlijden door verkeerde thuishulpdistributiebedrijf opgehaald, onvindbaar, en ik moest naast de drie maanden huur (a 7 euro per maand) ook nog eens nieuwe a 70 euro vergoeden wegens zoekmaken. Als ik dat geweten had had ik er op dag 1 zelf een gekocht, waanzin dit.

Samenvatting van deze stap : je hebt als huisarts ZORGPLICHT voor je patiënt, en hem met een formuliertje het riet in sturen, hopend op een goede afloop valt daar niet onder. Ik zou echt zeggen : “moet u luisteren, u hebt wettelijk recht op een vergoeding, maar ik adviseer u ten sterkste morgen naar de hulpmiddelwinkel te gaan en er zelf een aan te schaffen, want u komt in een molen van goedbedoelde bureaucratie terecht en dat wil ik u besparen. Met de eigen risico’s van 100’den euro’s lijkt het me sowieso de te bewandelen route. Afijn.

Stap 2 : De Zorgverzekeraar
“Alleen een specialist mag een brace voorschrijven”. Reality check 2.

We hebben toch Big Data en de zorgverzekeraars meten echt ALLES wat er maar te meten is. Waarom dan, alsjeblieft een antwoord, waarom staat er naast het vakje “afkeuren, moet naar specialist” niet “Let op : deze afkeuring gaat automatisch leiden tot minimale meerkosten van 150 euro, waarschijnlijk meer dan 1500 euro” WEET JE ZEKER DAT JE DEZE AANVRAAG WILT AFKEUREN J/N ?

Stap 3 : De specialist
Waarom, o waarom, laat een specialist hier een echo maken? Heeft deze specialist de begeleidende brief van de huisarts niet gezien? Typisch gevalletje “when you’re a hammer everything looks like a nail?” Geef een specialist een knie en hij gaat echo’s maken.

Specialist had briefje moeten lezen en krabbel moeten zetten : “Inoperabel, brace aanmeten”. Vette gemiste kans tot kostenbesparing, ook hier weer.

Stap 4 : Competentiestrijd specialisten
Wat er vervolgens gebeurt grenst aan het misdadige! Een 87-jarige van hot naar her sturen, second opinions en wat al niet meer en NIEMAND die terug gaat naar de oorspronkelijke zorg vraag. Bizar.

Het heeft er alle schijn van dat het zorgcircuit het wel geloofd, wij voeren onze checklijstjes uit, volgen de stappen van onze workflow software en dat is dat.

Een 87 is dus 6 maanden gemarteld, (wat is de levensverwachting van een 87-jarige eigenlijk tegenwoordig?) en uiteindelijk is het advies van de huisarts gevolgd.

Hoe had dit voorkomen kunnen worden?
1) Huisartsen moeten :
A) veel vaker en sneller kleine kosten direct door de klant laten betalen met als uitleg hierboven. Desnoods met een begeleidend briefje mee naar huis zodat de kinderen het na kunnen lezen (en actie kunnen ondernemen)
B) tekenbevoegd zijn voor dit soort basishulpmiddelen < 100 euro (eventueel kan ZKV gesprek voeren als een huisarts opeens erg veel voorschrijft, maar ik zie daar het probleem niet van in, de doorverwijslast van zo'n huisarts zal waarschijnkijk ook veel lager zijn, tel uit je winst) 2)  De wokflowsoftware van de ZKV's moet aangepast worden: BigData ervaringsdata (vervolgkosten bij afkeuring) opnemen in de invulschermen, zodat de bediener zich bewust wordt van wat hij gaat aanrichten. Als de kostenoverschrijding tegen de workflow ingaat : escalatie naar teamleider die directe goedkeuring kan geven. 3) Reality Check op alle vlakken. Mensen denk nou na voor je doorverwijst! Dit kost ons premiebetalers bakken en bakken met geld en de zorg wordt er SLECHTER door in plaats van BETER. TwitterVolgen

Extraterrestrials can see planet earth heating up

“Do extra terrestrials exist daddy?” What a great question for this mornings breakfast!

We went through the age of the earth (4 billion years) and the amount of time we earthlings have been really looking for ET (about 100 years). Chances that other intelligent communities are looking for fellow Galaxians are pretty high we decided, and the fact that THEY haven’t found US means (for daddy) that they don’t exist.

“Or they decided that they didn’t want to see us daddy”

Yup

“Or that son”

I just realized that our planet is heating up so fast (now 1,5 degrees warmer than in 1850) that ET on the nearest inhabitable rock (12 lightyears away) with a sensitive infrared telescope will be able to see Planet Earth pop up in the 10-yearly statistics : that little blue dot is heating up really fast.

ET’s message to “stop climate change really fast or else” will take 12 years to get here. He realizes that at the pace Earth’s climate is changing his message will come too late. He’s really sad and turns his eye away.

We’ll have to be our own ET’s : “Stop burning Fossil Fuels Now!!”
